Your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. One way some people like to start the day is to get information about what’s ahead of them. We’ve largely been taught it’s impossible to procure such info. But some believe tarot cards can help us understand what’s unfolding in our lives so that we can be prepared and take appropriate action. This is the idea behind a daily tarot spread.
“I think the morning is the best time [to pull tarot cards], because then, it gives you an idea of how to deal with your day,” says tarot reader Daisy Bueno. Here are a few tips from her on doing a daily tarot spread.

Ask for spiritual protection.
Tarot cards are connected to “the universe and the spirits,” which “hold the space to help you understand your problems and troubles,” says Bueno. To make sure the guidance is coming from the highest place possible, she recommends saying something like “I ask my protector guards to show me what I need to know and what I’m allowed to know.” This way, she says, “they guide you to the right message, and then when you read the message, everything makes sense.”

Ask a general question about your day.
While you might want to ask a specific question about your life, you can also simply ask what to know about the day ahead of you. “Normally, when I do it for myself, I just ask the universe to show me how my day is going to be or how I should deal with my day,” says Bueno. “Let’s say, if I get the tower — a card that’s more dramatic — I would prepare for that and not be shocked and not be too upset about it but be prepared for something to happen.”

Draw a simple spread.
Shuffle the cards, and spread them out in front of you, face-down. Then, you can select just one if you would like a basic message about your day. Or, try two or three if you’d like more information. For instance, you can pull one to get a basic sense of what you can expect for the day, then another one to help you understand how to best handle that event. If you’d like, you can try a more complex spread like the five-card cross or the celtic cross, which provides details about different situations in your life and how you can act in your best interests.

Consult the booklet — and your intuition.
Most tarot decks come with booklets; if yours doesn’t, you can look up the meanings of the cards online (here is a guide). Cards can have multiple meanings, though, so it’s helpful to consult your own intuition about what each card means in each context. For instance, the devil can represent a toxic relationship or an addiction you are trying to break free from, says Bueno. “People don’t like the devil very much, but the devil doesn’t mean something bad’s going to happen,” she says. Instead, it could mean you have an opportunity to say “no” to a bad habit that has plagued you. “You can try to cut the ties and free yourself,” she says. “The spirits are guiding you to choose the right message at the moment.”
