How to Trip Sit
Deciding to hold space for someone while they’re on a psychedelic or deciding that someone is going to hold space for you while you are on a psychedelic is a big decision. Trip sitting can be incredibly rewarding. You can help support people through finding deep healing and clarity—or simply support them through a very challenging moment. If someone is trip sitting for you, it can completely shape the experience for good or for bad, even if the person has good intentions, so it’s important to ask the right questions before the experience begins.
Currently, we’re in a strange time in the psychedelic movement. More and more people are becoming curious about using psychedelics to heal, but, because they’re still federally illegal, it can be very hard to find someone trustworthy to trip sit. In this course, we provide people who want to trip sit and people who are looking for trip sitters with a framework for success.

this course provides you with what you need to properly vet a person who might hold space for you. We talk about what questions to ask the person ahead of time if they’re a family member or friend, as well as red flags if you’re speaking to someone who claims to be a professional trip sitter.

There’s a lot of confusion about what trip sitting is—and isn’t. For example, does trip sitting mean that you have to meet with the person ahead of time to help them discuss their intentions? Does it mean that you’re required to be there for them once the experience is over? And does it include holding ceremonies for groups of people or incorporating psychedelics into your therapy practice? Before we teach you how to trip sit, we educate you on what trip sitting actually entails, and what requires more in-depth training.
There’s a lot of questions that a person needs to ask themselves before they hold space for someone else. Even if you’ve had a lot of psychedelic experiences, every person and every trip is different, especially if you’re trip sitting for someone who is tripping for the first time or is looking to have a psychedelic experience for mental health. In this episode, we provide a framework for a potential trip sitter and tripper to have a productive and transparent conversation to make sure everyone is on the same page, and that the trip is set up for success. If you’re looking at trip sitting for a friend or family member, this is also very important to ensure proper boundaries and to make sure that you are the best person to do this for them, given your current and past relationship with them.
There’s a lot that goes into setting up a trip properly. There’s the space, the music, how the trip begins, what you do while the trip is taking place (do you check in? let them ride it out?), and how the trip ends. In this episode, we cover what an arc of a journey normally looks like, when to check in with the person who is tripping, how to check in, and how you might suggest to them a change in setting or activities if it feels they might need to focus their attention elsewhere.
One of the biggest fears that both trip sitters and prospective trippers have is the dreaded “bad trip.” When trip sitters handle these situations incorrectly, it can actually make an experience worse, instead of better. In worst case scenarios, it can lead to trauma. For example, the instinctual thing to do is to run to the person and soothe them, but, actually, sometimes doing that just interferes with someone’s journey and prevents them from moving through the experience. We cover how to use your intuition and how to ask the right questions if someone appears to be going through something challenging. We also provide tools for keeping yourself calm, and helping the person move through what’s emerging, if that’s what they want.
One of the key differences between a trip that’s done casually, and one that’s done intentionally, with a trip sitter, is what happens when the trip is over. Sometimes people will need or want professional support following a psychedelic experience. We provide you with resources for helping them figure that out and then referring them to someone who can help. We also provide you with a foundation for helping the person begin to process what happened with them, and when it’s appropriate to bring up content you noticed emerging during the experience.
If after you’ve finished the course (or after you’ve used the foundation you built in this course to trip sit), you’re ready to go deeper, we’ve got you. We provide resources for becoming trained as a professional trip sitter and to continue your journey of holding space. We also cover self-care, which is as important for the trip sitter as it is for the person who tripped, and how to clear the energy of anything emotional that have may have emerged while you were holding space for someone else.

Why This Course?
Psychedelic therapy trainings often cost thousands of dollars. Many also require that you’re a licensed therapist already, which means you have to go to school to become a therapist and then take their training. We’re in support of these trainings, many of which are wonderful and facilitated by DoubleBlind allies. They are necessary if you want to be a professional facilitator, but not everyone does or can. With this course, you can start building a foundation, today. If you want to go deeper, we’ll provide you with the resources to do that.
You can start the course and go through the materials at your own pace. You will have access to the materials forever, so you can go back and reference them as many times as you want. We recommend you reference the questions for preparation and integration, and our checklists each time you agree to trip sit for someone.
The course comes with tools such as questions for before the trip, playlists for during the trip, and questions for after the trip. There’s no need to figure this stuff out when people with decades of experience already have.
Learn from the world’s leading experts in psychedelics. More than 5000 students have graduated from our courses. We’re highly intentional about the teachers we bring onboard. Tony and Skye are brilliant and incredibly experienced at navigating all that may emerge during a trip, in a variety of settings.
Just because you care about someone or you’ve done psychedelics many times doesn’t mean you’re ready to hold space for them—or to hold space at all. Know what you’re signing up for, acquire the foundation necessary for success.
Provide yourself with the framework to handle challenging situations or the dreaded “bad trip.” Keep your loved ones safe and support them in getting the most they can out of the experience.
Worried about the cost of the course? Worried it won’t give you what you’re looking for? You’ll have 14-days to get your money back in full.
All the proceeds from our courses go directly back to funding our journalism to further the psychedelic movement.
What Our Students Are Saying
It was clean, it was accessible, it was really understandable, and I’m super glad I took the course.
“The real backbone of the course is that the two presenters were so terrific, and their interactions are so dynamic and warm. They walk a really fine line between being really understanding of the tripper and supportive, but also super professional. They were very articulate, they explained things in ways that just made absolute sense and therefore allowed those ideas to stick in my mind after the course was over.”
Who This Course is For
If you’re looking to trip sit for people you know (either because someone has asked you or you feel called to support others), this course will provide you with the tools you need to begin doing that. It’s important, especially when tripping for loved ones, that you know how to have conversations around boundaries and expectations so you can properly support the person.
This course will not train you to be a psychedelic therapist, shaman, or underground guide. Trip sitting for people you do not know and for groups is beyond the scope of what we can responsibly cover here. But if you are a therapist, medical professional, massage therapist, yogi, or just psychonaut who thinks you might like to become a professional trip sitter, this course is a good starting point to see if you’re interested in going deeper, before committing to a more extensive program. For people interested in ceremony, this may require travelling abroad. For people interested in clinical contexts, this often requires thousands of dollars and a therapy license, before the training. So start here, and see if you’re ready for more.
Whether you’ve tripped before and just want to be supported next time or you’ve never tripped before and want support, because you’re afraid, this course will help you understand what to look for in a trip sitter. It’s very important that you ask the right questions of a potential trip sitter, whether you know them or not, and you look out for potential red flags. Just because someone says they have a lot of experience holding space or someone loves you doesn’t mean they’re the right person to be your trip sitter.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. This course is not a professional psychedelic therapy training. We recommend our friends at Fluence for something like that. If you’re not ready to commit to a program that extensive yet, this course is a good starting place.
Yes! This course will provide you with information on how to vet a trip sitter or how to talk to a loved one about trip sitting for you. Unfortunately, we cannot refer you to a trip sitter as it’s a liability, but that’s exactly why we created this course. We wanted to empower people like you to find someone in their life who might be able to fit this role.
It’s no secret that we’re advocates for the overturning of psychedelic prohibition at DoubleBlind, but it’s a liability for us to refer people to underground facilitators or give them access to substances that are federally illegal. So we love you, but please don’t ask.
It depends on your level of experience. If you have experience holding space, but you’ve never formally learned about it, we do recommend this course as it’s taught by two people who have extensive training in holding space ceremonially and clinically. It’s always good to get tips and tricks from other people. If you have already done trainings such as the training with MAPS and the Zendo Project or in ceremony with a facilitator, you might find that this course is too beginner for you. The good news is you can get 100% of your money back within 14 days if that’s the case.
It can’t hurt! But it’s important to remember that it’s not a good idea to convince someone to trip sit for you, just like it’s not a good idea for someone to convince you to take a psychedelic if you don’t feel ready. So you can buy them this course, but also be careful to honor their boundaries, because it won’t be a good experience for you, either, if they go into it reluctantly.
Once you buy the course, all of the materials can be accessed online with a username and log-in through our website.
There are many fantastic training programs, such as the trainings through Fluence, MAPS, and Psychedelics Today. We are friends with all of these people and support their work! But we noticed in our community that there were many people who were interested in trip sitting who didn’t have the money or the interest in investing in these programs, and wanted something more introductory, so they could learn about trip sitting for friends and family. That’s why we designed this course.
It includes five recorded classes, five written companions, supplementary materials such as questions to ask yourself and the tripper, playlists, and PDFs with resources for additional learning, including books and trusted integration therapists for trippers who need more support following their psychedelic experience.
Once you enroll in the course, you can start it whenever you like and take it at your own pace. You’ll have access to the materials forever so you can also go back and reference them whenever you like, which we recommend before you trip sit someone. We open and close enrollment, however. If enrollment is open, but you don’t have time to start the course now, you might still want to sign up so you don’t miss your chance. If enrollment is currently closed, we recommend you put your name on the waitlist and you’ll be notified when enrollment opens again.
Yes, we’ve had people from all over the world take the course! Our community is very global.
No problem! You’ll have 14 days to get your money back in full.
Absolutely! Our courses make for great gifts, and they’re also fun to take with friends and family. You’ll just need to use the person’s email address at checkout so that they are enrolled, instead of you.
You can pay for the course in four installments using Klarna. Just check the Klarna option when you checkout of our store. If it’s still too expensive that way, we also offer scholarships. Just email [email protected] to inquire.
